World Cup Mzansi 2010

Jun 30 2010

Scenes from Pretoria after our dramatic 1-0 win over Algeria.  If you look closely, Aaron (light plaid shirt), Mike, and I (hat and Fulham away jersey) appear in the left side of the elated crowd.

Celebrating outside Loftus Versfeld.  Aaron and Mike enter the frame from left near the end of the video.

This is not the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but it’s definitely my favorite song from the South Africa trip.  This music video illustrates the beautiful game in its purest form.

Driving on the left.  Surprisingly, it did not take long to get acclimated to this, although I am thankful that the clutch and brake/gas pedal are on the same feet as in U.S. cars.  Shortly after this picture was taken, as we were driving through Pretoria en route to Rustenburg for the USA v England game, I got pulled over by a van of about half a dozen police officers.  Standard.  Aaron and Mike were each enjoying a bottle of Windhoek (a local beer), which we thought was legal but clearly had been misinformed.  The cops essentially surrounded the Land Rover, casually scolded the two passengers for drinking in the car, kindly asked them to chug their drinks, and declined my offer to show them my license.  Then, as I had recently made a wrong turn, I asked if they could simply point us in the direction of Rustenburg.  Not only did they offer to escort us to the appropriate route, two of the women climbed in the back seat with Mike and gave directions while the police van followed.  We offered them each a beer, but needless to say, they politely declined.
